~ 3 DOORS DOWN ~
I first came across the band when I was browsing for some new tracks for my Ipod a few years ago. I didn't really know much about them and never heard of them before but I really liked the music. After listening to several of their tracks I thought I would find out more about them. I wouldn't say they are a favourite band of mine but their music is very good and the album- 3 Doors Down is worth reviewing.
~ INFO - Who are they? ~
3 Doors Down is an American rock band formed in 1994. They are labelled with the record company Republic Universal and were founded in Mississippi. The band consisted at the beginning of three friends, Brad Arnold- Drummer, Matt Roberts- guitarist and Todd Harrell on Bass. As they becoming more successful in local gigs Brad Arnold not only did drums but also did the vocals because n one else wanted to do it. Eventually another guitarist Chris Henderson was asked to join and they eventually got a record deal. The band is so successful they have played along side other major rock bands including Nickelback and Staind.
~ 3 Doors Down The Album ~
This album is the most recent album from the band and was released in May of 2008. There were 154,000 copies sold in the first week of its release.
Tracks-
1 - Train (3.10)
The first song on the track was originally only released as a promotion for the radio and no music video was made for the song. You know when you listen to this first opening song that it is going to be an immense album. I think it is has a good rhythm and has a heavy rock sound to it. The sound is good and although it was supposed to be a single radio hit it was asked for so much they added it to this album. I found the lyrics strange but it works well with the voice.
The song refers to 'put me on a train mama' which maybe shows he wants to break free and start a new life. 8/10.
2 - Citizen/ Soldier (3.52)
This second track is very interesting and was released in conveying views about the National Guard. The lyrics are very unique and describes why being a soldier is away of saving the nation. In particular I loved the lines-
'Holding the light for the ones that we guide from the dark of despair' and 'I may walk beside you but you may not see me'. They are very powerful and the song created a whole atmosphere of what they go through to let us be free. The song made such an impact that it was put on the National Guard website as part as a recruitment campaign. 9/10.
3 - Its Not My Time (4.05)
Quite a longer track Its Not My Time is my favourite song by the band and I love the lyrics and sound of the song. The feeling that he is not giving up on anything just because life is hard is a great moral for everyone. Brad's voice is amazing in this song and he shows his talent well. My favourite lines are in the chorus- 'It's not my time, I'm not going'. The song has been played many times in concerts and is one of the most successful ones of the album. The music video is also really good and follows a man in a city avoiding obstacles maybe meaning the obstacles of life. I'm glad it is 4 mins long as it as a brilliant tempo. 10/10.
4 - Let Me Be Myself (3.48)
This track is also one of my favourites and the singer Brad said that it means a lot to him. The song has powerful meanings and lyrics and shows again how pain is hard to defeat and that you should be yourself. I like this meaning and the song is more grunge than the rest making it a kind of power Ballard song.
It is a very chilling song but with influential words. 'Would you one time let me be myself'. 9/10.
5 - Pages (3.47)
Pages, again has some really interesting words which compel a man's pain in writing. I haven't really listened to this song much be know it is a hard hitting track which is quite depressing though upbeat. The words I think are almost metaphorical and so descriptive you can imagine it. 'You can see that this broken soul is bleeding'. 8/10.
6 - It's the Only One You've Got (4.23)
At over four mins this song is quite long compared to the others. All of the songs I think have excellent morals behind them and this one doesn't disappoint again. The words have the meanings of live your life and don't forget to let people in. I like this song as it focuses on those who feel alone.
'You've got to life this life your given'. 8/10
7 - Give It To Me ( 3.21)
This song is pretty different to the others and conveys that it is directed to a lost love. Not being one of my favourites I don't listen to this one a lot but I do like the pace and words of the song. Some may be able to make a connection to what is going on in the song. 'I've been on my knees for a long time'. 7/10.
8 - These Days (3.39)
These days is a more mellow yet complex song with an image of not looking and living in the past. I liked the way it contrasts with the song before in saying that its better to be on your own these days. It has a much more-'I don't care' attitude and for this I quite like it. 9/10.
9 - You Arms Feel Like Home (3.44)
Another great track, this song is more of a love song but still has the rock pace and sound. When I first listened to it I didn't think much of it but it grew one me and I think everyone can relate to someone in their life feeling their like home. I certainly I know I feel at home in my man's arms and it makes me smile as it reminds me of him. The lyrics 'hold on, your home to me'. 10/10.
10 - Runaway (3.24)
A fine paced song with a very good way of looking at running away.
I like the tempo in this particularly but the lyrics are quite meaningful too. 'I wanna be somewhere so far away'. I know when people feel its getting too much they just want to go somewhere to get away from it which is why I think the song has meaningful words. 8/10
11 - When It's Over (4.18)
I haven't really listened to this song much to be honest but I know it changes the subject and it is more of an angry song. The tempo is quite fast and shows the hatred for someone. It's a good change to the other tracks and defiantly worth the listen. 9/10.
12 - She Don't Want The World (4.03)
This song is also different to the main theme of the tracks and it is sung about a woman and not in the first person 'I' like most of them are. The story tells of her love for someone. A good easy listening song. 8/10.
~ THOUGHTS ~
The album consists of really great tracks that vary with speed, meanings and morals. There are some superior, heavy songs with fast words and are upbeat and then there are a few that are mellow and are good when you want to chill out. I only had one or two of the songs when I first saw the band but now had to get this album as there are so many great songs. There are a few bonus tracks on the CD that are acoustic versions of some of the songs above which sound really good. I would defiantly recommend this album to anyone who likes soft and heavy rock.
