The Millennium Bell - Mike OldfieldMike's Message for the future (532 words)

If you have never heard The Millennium Bell you have really missed a treat from the great Mr O. Right from the first track you are taken through a musical journey that encompasses all time and continents. Peace on Earth: is a modern piece that is reminiscent of a carol. With additional vocals by the London Handel Choir, it is a reflection of how earth would have been in the 1st millennia. Pacha Mama: has a more primal edge to it and boasts amongst others Miriam Stockley on vocals together with the London Handel and Grant gospel choirs. nonsense! This album sounds like musical doodlings of a pop centric writer trying in vain to compose something vaguely serious/classical in nature. Oldfield has clearly used sequencing a lot. He takes a riff or simple melody and repeats it endlessly as a loop, adding and taking away bits to create some sort of variety. Perhaps Oldfield would never profess that it is anything other than Tubular Bells (repeated looping riffs) but with violin samples, but he must have agreed to Classic FM stating that it was in the same league as The Planets by Holst! To summarise: I found the repetition very tiresome and annoying to such an extent that I can t listen to ...
