Advantages: Very fresh for its age
Disadvantages: It naturally depends on your taste in music
Being from the early to mid 80s era means it is likely that you haven’t heard of this group. It is likely however that you have heard of some of their tunes. Tennessee? Mr Wendel? Basically the style consists of old school hip-hop sounds with upbeat rhythms. They could be best described as a precursor to Jurassic 5 or Digable Planets. The album itself is the most acclaimed from AD and boasts all the classic tunes. All the tracks are distinct, each with its own message. If, like me, you’ve got a bit tired of the expletive-ridden trend that has crept in to virtually all of the modern hip hop releases, then you will find arrested development a refreshing change. Even though many are over 20 years old the tracks don’t seem very dated at all. The album can be picked up for a little less that £10, I actually used my dooyoo miles to buy it on Amazon.

- 28/01/03 Ok, I concede that Arrested Development are not quite as old as I though. However, isnt it true that anything over 7 years old seems as though it comes from the 80s? |

- 12/08/01 This is a very interesting opinion, which is well written and well considered. However, there is one monumental factual error contained within it. Arrested Development began in the Mid 1990's and 'Mr wendel' was released in 1993, therfore there is no reason why many of today's current hip hop fans will not have some knowledge of the group's output. |
