... already a great song by Otis Redding, but when Aretha recorded it, it was taken to new heights. It could be her best song, but there are so many other fantastic ones to chose from. If you like R& B there's songs like "Chain of fools" and "Rock steady". There's plenty of Aretha's gospel roots, too, especially in "Think", "Don't play that song" (when she sings "You lied" she almost sounds victorious), and the version of "Bridge over troubled water...more

Aretha is simply the best female singer there has ever been. No one in pop / soul comes close, and even compared to Maria Callas, or Billie Holliday - I still think that Aretha at her best is unbeatable. And this is a selection from her golden years, 1967 - 74. There are so many soul classics on here - satisfaction is surely guaranteed for anyone. It starts with "I never loved a man the way I loved you", which is perfect R&B. She's singing the traditional black woman's tale about being a victim, but in such a powerful way that you know it can't go on much longer.
