As a child of the seventies, the music of the Carpenters was pretty ubiquitous. They were hugely popular at the time and as a result their music was frequently played on the radio and they were regulars on "Top of the Pops". At the time, I could take them or leave them - I found them pleasant, but deeply uncool and for me the delights of Slade, the Sweet, and David Bowie were more interesting, and if I wanted melodic pop music, the completely non-threatening Osmonds seemed more acceptable in the school playground back then.
