A great buy for anyone that enjoys rock, ska, reggae, and/or hip-hop music

From the moment I began listening to this album, I fell in love with this band. They changed the way that felt about music, listened to it, and enjoyed it. Sublime is one of those bands that cannot be defined to a single genre. We are so quick to categorize things these days as pop or hip-hop or rock. Sublime defied that logic, especially in this album. They have sappy cover songs like "Rivers of Babylon", hard-hitting ska in "Date Rape" and laid back southern California stylings with "Let's Go Get Stoned". I think that the untimely demise of Sublime's lead singer, Bradley Nowell added to the legend and fame of this band. Through his death, the band achieved new life in a fan base and a following. Those fans, including myself, looked to this album as a means to understand just where one of the greatest bands this side of the world has ever seen really got their start. 40 oz. to freedom is like having a baseball rookie card. You look at the stats and the minor achievements that they had and are put into amazement of the player they will become. 40 oz. to Freedom is Sublime's rookie card. They showed the world just what they had from the very beginning. It's amazing the diversity and power they had as artists. If you enjoy rock, ska, reggae, and/or hip-hop, I would recommend this album. The thing about Sublime is that because of their diversity, they are open to all audiences, and can be easily enjoyed by just about everyone.

      Buy it then Love it.

This album is arguably the best offering from rap/reggae/punk fusion band , Sublime. The untimely demise of the lead singer in a very rock 'n' roll manner means that with no new releases, its a good job that this album is so good.

Almost thirty tracks confirms its status as one of those value for money albums and there are so many stand out tracks on this record that it would futile to list them.

The album has a very free-flowing feel to it, however, this can also be interpreted as a lack of structure or consistency. I prefer to say that this is a reflection on its raw grit and energy. Most people would struggle to avoid finding a track they like on here and if any of the three above genres interest you then this will be right up your street.

There is a cover of 'Rivers of Babylon' which is blissfully relaxing and will appeal to fans of the old-school reggae style. While the constant switching and changing of the musical stylings means that the whole album stays fresh and remains interesting throughout, whether its your first listen or your fiftieth.

Sublime have been guilty of some slightly less consistent records, but this record serves as hard evidence of their full potential.
