Advantages: Some great songs by Elvis

Disadvantages: OLD SHEP doesn't real fit on the album

In his 23 year career Elvis Presley recorded almost 1000 songs, many of them love songs. Some of these were great songs, some of them decidedly less so, but this collection of 50 is a nice selection.

My favourite songs from the album are those recorded in the 1970s. ALWAYS ON MY MIND has always been a favourite, as has SUSPICIOUS MINDS. These 2 songs typify the style of love song Elvis was singing in the 1970s - by 1972 his marriage to Priscilla had gone sour and he was divorced the following year. This clearly influenced his choice of material and there is a sad tone to many of the songs from this period. This doesn't make them bad though, much the opposite.

There's lightweight fluff on the album too, such as POCKETFUL OF RAINBOWS and TRUE LOVE.

The only real surprise on the album is the inclusion of the song OLD SHEP. OK, so it is a love song, but it is a love song about a dog, which is not really what we expect when we think of a love song. Despite this slight mis-step this is a very good album.
