Advantages: An early insight into the early days of 'DC
Disadvantages: Yes, I know its an EP - but there must be some more ealry 'missing' tracks?
AC/DC''s 74' Jailbreak was an EP containing five songs that had comprised earlier recording made by the band when Bon Scott ruled the mic for the band.
The songs are a great introduction to the AC/DC 'sound', While the LP was released in America in 1984, several years after the untimely death of Bon Scott having been replaced by Brian Johnson.
Personally, althrough some of the songs of the Johnson era of the band are great rock songs, I prefer the Bon Scott era as the songs are much more meaningful lyrically. For instance a song like 'I Feel Safe In New York City' from Stiff Upper Lip - a great driving riff based song - actually only contains the words 'I Feel Safe In New York City!'
Scott's lyrics are at the forefront on '74 Jailbreak. From the excellent Jailbreak 'There was a friend of mine on murder/ And the judge's gavel fell / Jury found him guilty / gave him sixteen years in hell' Great stuff.
There's also a storming cover of the song 'Baby Please Don't Go' which adds a heavy blues rock sound to the song very similar to Van Halen's version of The Kinks 'You Really Got Me' and ZZ Top's 'I Thank You.' Just listen to Angus' strorming guitar solo on this song.
And then there's Angus, whose amazing guitar sound can only be accompanied by his amazing live sound and stage precense - check out the cover!
While there are greater albums by AC/DC (and longer) '74 Jailbreak is a great introduction to the band who would go on to be massive across the world and develop a rock sound like no other.
Summary: A great introduction to the band
