Alternative 4 - Anathema ... Eternity left behind most of the metal elements from Anathema s early years, Alternative 4 is their final album that could be reasonably labelled as doom metal for evoking the same melancholy atmosphere, albeit in a mostly lighter fashion with the heavy guitars all but replaced by acoustic and the death growl vocals now firmly a thing of the past. Not yet going the full way to prog rock throwback, this is still authentic old-school Anathema with a less aggressive approach, with a greater focus on atmosphere but one that doesn t come at a cost to the music itself. They Die - Anathema ... is a bit of an oddity, a single released on the back of an E.P., but with only 1,000 copies pressed it was more of an attempt to establish Liverpool s finest metal band in order that their career could properly begin. Released by Witchhunt Records (whoever they are), this limited release takes the final two songs from the magnificent Crestfallen E.P. and switches them in order, so that the comparatively upbeat and fast rocking They Die (but only comparatively) is followed up by the melancholy and powerful Crestfallen itself, arguably the band s crowning achievement. On Tour With Eric Clapton - Delaney & Bonnie ... a little ironically, there is a gap in Clapton s recent "Complete Clapton" album; a gap which Delaney and Bonnie s "On Tour With Eric Clapton". Clapton had toured with Delaney and Bonnie with his band Blind Faith, but finding himself at a loose end after they split up, he opted to join them again to keep his hand in. He must have enjoyed the experience, as he later took some of the band he played with here and recorded with them as Derek and the Dominos; a band to whom the original version of the Clapton classic "Layla" was credited.
