Rough Guide To The Music Of Eastern Europe ... Guide, best known for their budget travel guides, has been steadily expanding in other areas, and has been responsible for quite a few musical "guides" over the years. This 1998 album, marketed as "Rough Guide to the Music of Eastern Europe", does pretty much exactly what is says on the package: provides quite a wide ranging overview of folk and (occasionally) folk-inspired music of Eastern Europe. This is an album that pretty much started my liking for "world music" coming from my part of the world, and despite its age it remains a good compilation which really does showcase the variety of what s on offer quite well. The Songs Of Violetta Parra - Violetta Parra ... Parra s anthology is an excellent collection of the Chilean artist s songs as you ve never heard them before, the sound is much improved when compared to the rugged and aged original releases. That doesn t mean that the music sounds any less from a bygone era than it is. The style of singing that Parra uses is hard to find today, she reveals a lot of emotion in her singing, whether it be passion, anger or sadness. Whether it s love songs, political rants, songs expressing feelings or observations, there s plenty to enjoy on this album and each song has a great combination of vocals, melody and some amazing guitar and charango playing. En Mana Kuoyo - Ayub Ogada ... you like world/african music then this album is for you! There is not one track on the album that you will dislike, its just so easy listening and completely relax s you after a hard days work. We bought it after hearing one of the tracks ( Kothbiro ) on the Ewan McGregors The Long Way Round program. We also bought the sound track from the program but didn t like it all and actually sold it on ebay! This album, though, is just very very very entrancing. I think it is the only album he made (16 years ago!). I have looked everywhere for another album but cannot find one which is a shame as I would buy ALL his albums.
