A nice introduction to the world of brass

Dinnington band have recently been given a substantial £1 million record deal and this CD is the first fruits from the deal. Dinnington were on their knees before this deal came, with dwindling numbers threatening the very survival of the band. As things stand now, the band is in a healthy state and has started competing again!

They were featured rather recently on the program "A Band for Britain" featured on BBC2 on Monday evenings, much to my dismay as I had my own band practice so I didnt get to see much of it!

Needless to say, I have the CD running in the car at the moment and it has its plus points and some negatives.

Depending on how into bands you are you will either scoff at the track listing or really enjoy it. A lot of the tracks are well known in band circles and possibly "overplayed" but then again if this is your first experience with a Brass Band CD then you may listen to the opening track and remember the Hovis bread theme. As I have mentioned tracks I will list the order!

      Dvorak's Largo
      Death Or Glory
      Abide With Me
      Floral Dance
      Annie's Song
      Pirates Of The Caribbean
      Jerusalem
      Great Escape
      Danny Boy
      Slaidburn
      Conquest Of Paradise
      Born Free

It seems that the band (or record company) have played it safe and have included well known tracks, which will appeal to the mainstream audience. There was a little criticism levied at the band for not being more adventurous with the programme. Bands in recent times have struggled to shake off the opinion that all they play is Hymns and Marches!

Musically, this is well polished piece of music, the pieces are enjoyable and some of the playing is excellent, praise surely to the Euphonium and Principal Cornet, along with the Soprano player. the artwork is also top notch, even though the keen eyed amongst you will notice that the picture on the front cover is flipped, meaning a bass like that in real life would be nigh on impossible!

It is an excellent CD if it is your first foray into the world of Brass Bands (which I would reccomend you do!) and it will surely whet your appetite for more, but dont be looking for a serious musical album to get into!
