Evoken manage to maintain a gloomy and unsettling atmopshere whilst sticking to a fairly narrow musical style throughout the album's one hour runtime, and whilst many funeral doom albums can be monotonous and boring, here the band manage to keep things interesting all the way through by incorporating subtle variations in song structure throughout each track. 'A Caress of the Void', the fourth album by US funeral doom band Evoken, is a crushing and hugely atmospheric listen. The songs consist of heavy, crawling, downtuned guitar riffs, interspersed with ethereal-sounding clean guitar chords played both between and during the lumbering, doomy backbone of each track. The contrast between heavy sections and clean sections works well in creating a cavernous, otherworldly atmosphere, which fits in well with the Victorian-spiritualism theme evident in the album's cover art.
