Caroline This is one that does not quite work, it feel a bit too mashed up with instruments that the message of the song does not get across in the best way it could. Not a bad track but could have been better had it been slowed down a little. 3.) Long Distance Call I feel that this could be a little bit better, it is a decent track but it seems a little too chirpy ...more

Premium Review A New Day At Midnight - David Gray: A new day a new dawn (935 words)

Rating:

**Introduction** There arent many artists who have had the kind of career that David Gray has had. The singer/songwriter from Sale in Greater Manchester released his debut album "A century Ends" in 1993 and released two more albums before he actually made it big with his fourth release "White Ladder" which was six years after the release of his debut album. Before the release of White Ladder his albums had reached no higher than 92 on the UK Album chart, White Ladder was a massive hit reaching number one in the album charts thanks in no small part to the success of singles "Babylon", This years love and Please forgive ...  Read the complete review

Written in the aftermath of his father?s death from cancer, A New Day At Dawn sees David Gray show his more introspective side. Previous album White Ladder was a massive turning point for Gray, seeing him finally break through into the mainstream with his own inimitable brand of folk-based tales. The opposite end of the spectrum from someone such as Billy Bragg, with much less emphasis on politics, the sheer simplistic beauty of Ladder was in appealing to the emotions that we all go through in the process of love. From the homespun romance of Sail Away and This Years Love to the regret of love lost in Please Forgive Me and the breakthrough anthemic Babylon, the album ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A New Day At Midnight - David Gray: DAWN TILL DUSK (1282 words)

David Gray is a fairly recent discovery for me, only having really become familiar with his music in the last decade or so. It’s hard to attach a genre to this man, though to me he comes across as a kind of rock/blues/folk combination. He has a wonderfully unique gravelly voice that adds raw emotion and a melodramatic air to his songs of love. It’s hard to discover much about the artist himself (I don’t think he actively covets publicity) other than for his music. David was born in Manchester in 1970, although he was brought up in Wales, and went on to a University education in Liverpool. His career got off to a faltering start and he has switched ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Gray Days are here again!!! (401 words)
by - written on 31/12/02 (Useful, 153 readings)
Rating:

For years and I mean years David Gray was a struggling singer songwriter who against the odds stuck to his guns with determination and self belief. His fan base were a select few and although his albums were well received critically he never bothered the charts and remained anonymous to the public at large. When he appeared in the film "This Years Love" basically playing himself, David Gray was virtually an unknown. As we all know his look was about to change. The single "Babylon", was massive, his album "White Ladder" sold millions resulting in a renewed interest in his extensive back catalogue and David's eagerly anticipated new ...  Read the complete review
