OK. First of all, Coldplay have exactly proven the opposite of being a great band. "A Rush of Blood To The Head" is a nice album, but you can easily sense that there's been a lack of creativity on there.
Many melodies are not round, they suddenly open at indefinite parts. (You get used to that when you listen in, but it should be mentioned though).
Chris Martin was never a great chorus-writer (except "Don't Panic", "Trouble")... there are beautiful verses and also nice lyrical ideas partly(Amsterdam, Rush, even Green Eyes). But as a musician and also as a committed music expert or fan you hear that many songs are not finished, and that there isn't as much enthusiasmn and truth behind as on the debut album.
"In My Place", e.g. was a riff the guitar player's written when he was 15, and as stated by theirselves, in lack of a better hitsingle the record company forced them to get it on there.
And that is what the whole album sounds like.
And anyway. Coldplay didn't grow. They just copied some Beatles and U2 refrains. ("Clocks" - terrible...Is it Bono or Chris Martin; Where are the roots). A bit disappointing. Of course he has a good voice and everything, that is for sure, but the young and free spirit of "Parachutes" and the "slick indie" definitely is missing. Coldplay are now a better "pop" band.
But they will never get on with bands like Radiohead, The Verve or U2.
... Coldplay running out of great ideas...
Might also be because Parachutes songs were too simple, the songs were basic and only lived from this great heart-and-soul-feeling, as "A Rush of Blood To The Head" Is empty, but maybe that is why it suits so well into this brave new world, and will be even more succesful. Empty.

But some pearls are on there, that is why 3 1/2 stars, I'd say.
"Warning Sign" (amazing), "Amsterdam" (very
good lyrics) and "A Rush of Blood To The Head".
Also "Politik" is nice. But only nice. One chord strummed and a "wannabe" intellectual lyric. Also bad drums on many trax. (weird snare sound). Completely bad and off the aim is "Green Eyes" (sounds like the rhythmn is Grandfather's saloon western), "Clocks" and "Daylight". Worst song though is "A Whisper", where they wanded show off some potential for alternative sounds that is not even there, it's quite invisible.
Shorty said and underlined:
"... Coldplay running out of great ideas..."
Might also be because Parachutes songs were too simple, the songs were basic and only lived from this great heart-and-soul-feeling, as "A Rush of Blood To The Head" in comparison is empty, but maybe that is why it suits so well into this brave new world, and will be even more succesful. Empty.

Welcome to dooyoo!

I'm a bit indifferent to Coldplay, and I reckon they can be grouped with Dido and David Gray in that their success is down to their safeness rather than their innovativeness...

Excellent stuff - brilliant first op. I kinda get the impression that you may be musical in some way either studying music!

Have a read and rate around the site and see how others write and get people noticing your name as a user - I'm sure you'll do fine here.

LAC, this isn't indie college rock. Its coffee table indie.

I agree, Coldplay are pretty on the ears but fairly empty.

I went to see them in Glasgow on Friday (chumming a mate, also Idlewild were supporting) and was too disconcerted by the absence of Bob the 'Wild bassist to pay much attention to the pretty, empty Coldplay boys. The bassist (CP, not 'wild) is cute though.

A good op if not for the need of a lot more length.
