Advantages: Well-performed, heartfelt love songs

Disadvantages: An inevitably slightly one-dimensional album

Conceived as an antidote to CASANOVA's concentration on sex (or "the other thing" as Neil Hannon called it), A SHORT ALBUM ABOUT LOVE is a deeply, achingly romantic record. Only seven songs in length, it was recorded as-live with a 30-piece orchestra, and contains some of Hannon's finest compositions.

One of the catchiest songs is the single from the album, 'Everybody Knows (Except You)', and 'Timewatching' is another near-classic. But for a sheer, unfettered declaration of deep love, try listening to 'If...'

The brevity of A SHORT ALBUM ABOUT LOVE is probably one of its strengths, as a longer album might have become mired in syrupy sincerity. But at seven songs it is just about right, and is an engrossing and enchanting listening experience.
