Advantages: Beautiful, honest songs about love.

Disadvantages: So short.

It was the quirky pop music of tracks like 'Generation Sex' which first interested me in The Divine Comedy, but it's this album that stands out as their strongest in my mind. There's no pop here and the frequently irreverant lyrics are gone to be replaced with beautiful and honest songs about love. The album is, as its title claims short, but each of the seven tracks is near to perfection.

The music reminds me at times of some of the classics of easy listening, but raised above this by a stronger classical influence. The band is joined by an orchestra, giving a broader backing to Neil Hannon superb, deep singing voice. Simple, thoughtful and often poetic lyrics perfectly match the mood created by the music and it's hard not to be moved by these tracks. Perhaps the first thing you'll notice is that 'In Pursuit of Happiness' provide a basis for the Tomorrow's World theme, though the later really can't compare with the original. If I had to pick a favourite, and I'd be hard pressed to, I'd choose 'Everybody Knows (Except You)' a mounrful ballad to unrequited love.

It's a little different to the rest of The Divine Comedy's work, but their inspired writing and composition is clearly present. This is a rare album that's with stood repeated listenings without ever tiring for me. If I had any complaint it's that the experience is over far too quickly, if only there was more of this.
