Mirror of Deception are a german doom band who specialise in true, old school doom that mixes Candlemass up with St Vitus, with big, heavy, lumbering riffs and tremendous use of momentum. Previous album 'Shards' was a somewhat patchy release, but new album ' A Smouldering Fire' is an absolute stormer, reminding of early release 'Foregone' with its brooding, slowly maturing riffs that churn on endlessly like rolling waves before building slowly over time to rousing peaks, yet also being much more up-tempo and urgent than Foregone in many places, alternately plodding along miserably then bounding forth with renewed purpose and energy.
