I am a lifelong fan of Genesis and remember that when this album was released in 1981 my big sister bought it. Now, my sister was into 'cool' punk bands and was not a typical Genesis fan but she had been stung by the hard rock flair of the album's title track 'Abacab'. Infact this is one of the more heavier rock songs produced by the band during this period with dramatic percussion, a twisted electric guitar and gruff, moody vocals. The movement towards a more pop orientated sound is quite obvious though too and this is reflected in other songs on the album such as 'No Reply' and 'Keep It Dark'. Released back in 1981 "Abacab" marked the birth of modern Genesis.Up until this point the group had emergenced themselves in writing material that ranged from grand epics filled with quirky english humour to songs that had roots in english poets.... With this album Tony Banks ,Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins ventured into their purpose built studios with virtually nothing writtain. With no time restrictions the band just jammed away,then listerned to what they had done,took bits they liked and then developed into songs.
