Advantages: A couple of good tracks and the live album 'Total Abandon' rocks
Disadvantages: Not up to the usual standard, I was dissapointed.
I'm a big purple fan and have most of their modern albums. This is an average offering. I saw them on the tour before I bought the album. As usual the live performance blew me away with the mix of old stuff and new stuff although they should playmore new stuff, it's be better after development on stage like they used to do.
Steve Morse has done a brilliant job of slotting into the line up. No one could ever replace Blackmore and so Morse hasn't tried to do this and plays with his own style and musicality which benefits the group as a whole. Purpendicular showed this brilliantly.
Some of the songs from this album were incredible on stage and slightly dissapointing on the album. The two best songs are Fingers to the Bone and Watching the Sky, both of which were immense on stage but are only good on the album. I would advise trying to get hold of a bootleg live recording of these two off Napster or on the live album 'Total Abandon'.
The last track is a rerecording of Bloodsucker (deliberately misspealt Bludsucker) and is nothing but a rerecording with Morse instead of Blackmore, I would have thought they could do something new with it or even vary it a little bit but no.
The albums before this, Purpendicular et. al. were really good, the band had chosen a direction for the 90's and gone there and it worked but this is almost a decision making album, they aren't quite sure where they're going, there's none of the usual flair or the feeling that some of the tracks were recorded ad lib that you get off the best purple albums. Hopefully they will emerge out of this (and they're hugely long tour) refreshed and decided and produce the stonking albums we all know they're capable of.
