About What You Know - Little Man Tate

On hearing the opening track 'Man I hate your band' I must admit I was preparing to be disappointed, but very quickly you come to realise these guys know how to spin a tune and have a great line in down to earth amusing lyrics. Every now and again they throw in a filler but in general this album literally speeds along. 'House party at Boothy's' reminds me fully of my misspent teens, although the lead singer clearly had more success at these parties than I ever did, and the reality of 'This must be love' and his reasons for her being the best bring back that brutal honesty of those teenage years. About What You Know is the debut album by Sheffield based band Little Man Tate who have somehow had little commercial success especially when compared to city contemporaries The Arctic Monkeys. I feel this is undeserved and that these guys are at least as talented as them, if not more. In an age where there are more indie bands than people in the UK and all of them are very generic, either trying to follow suit from some god awful band like Keane, trying to copy but making a hash out of an early Radiohead sound or sneaking in dire elements of pop punk and emo, these guys are a refreshing change.
