... 2.) Video" - 4:09 I loved this track from the moment I heard it in 2001. This is a lovely flowing track with a great beat. The track has a great message for fellow women. It's about learning to love yourself unconditionally. A great message as it shows the importance of having confidence in yourself. 3.) Promises" - 4:37 This is a funky track with some soft drums and India's guitar and voice sounding on top form. A track about broken promises, this track works really well and flow...more

...Introduction... I first heard of India Arie when I saw her on Later With Jools Holland when she released this album in 2001. She was born India Arie Simpson on October 3, 1975 in Denver Colorado, her father Ralph Simpson was an NBA Player and her mother Joyce was a former singer herself. India started having an interest in music at an early age and she pretty soon started learning to play various instruments. Though She is most well known for playing the guitar. She was discovered by a motown executive in 1999 and two years later released her debut album Acoustic Soul. ...India's voice... She has a great voice that has ...  Read the complete review

The title of the album sets the secene: Acoustic Soul. It is quite acoustic, but she is spot-on about soul. She is huge in America, nominated for seven Grammys, yet didn't win one(how did that happen). In the U.K she is practically unknown, releasing Video without too much of a splash and a remix of Brown Skin (which is nothing compared to the album version) She opens her album with the first of her dedications to her influences, and it sets the mood for the rest of the album. The next song is the upbeat 'Video', which is slightly ...  Read the complete review

This is one of those records that takes a very long time to hit you - but when it does, oh the bliss, it is just an amazing moment. India.Arie is quite simply a genius. Lyrically, vocally and spiritually she molds together an album, like none other I have ever heard before, for depth of feeling, right down to the intro and interludes! The first 'lyric proper' we hear on the album is in her single 'Video' - 'sometimes I shave my legs, and sometimes I don't'. This is an amazing way to start the album! It wakes the listener up ready for the intelligent ramblings of India and works amazingly. 'Video' is a catchy soulful number, ...  Read the complete review
