Advantages: some wonderful songs, poetic
Disadvantages: patchy in places
The rain falling outside was crashing on the window, as the lightening started to strike I decided to make the house perfect for when the other half came home. I put the fire on, set out a bottle of wine and a few ‘munchies’ nothing heavy as I already had food cooking. The bath was run and the oils ready to relax him, flicking through the CD collection I was looking for something to create the right atmosphere. Having only listened to the CD by Savage Garden once, I seemed to remember it being very slow going and full of lovely dovey. Anyway pressed for time I stuck with this choice and went to change into something more ‘comfortable’, queue the stockings and suspenders. The songs started to play and despite being in a different room they seemed perfect for what I wanted, music for the art of seduction. So in he walked, wet form the rain and not the happiest of bunnies, I sent him off to the bath and prepared the room for his ‘relaxation’ time. Massage oils at the ready my bunny came in and I set to work. This album created the perfect atmosphere for me to work my magic, I have been told I have good hands! So anyway onto the album… The album Affirmation is the second from Savage Garden, it is not really my type of music but it was a Christmas pressie. I would class this music as slushy lovely pop music, normally the kind I stay away from. I wasn’t impressed when I got this as a present, but I smiled anyway, like you do, it’s the thought that counts. It is full of very impressive songs, and coming from a dance chick that’s an honour! The most popular song by Savage Garden ‘Truly Madly Deeply’ is not on this album, but there are equally as good and better offerings, all it takes is listening to. Each song is very individual and will conjure up many emotions, be it love, thought provoking or lust (or maybe that’s just me on the last one) the a
lbum caters for every type of day and feeling. Full of what you would expect, slow grooving love songs, but with the odd surprise of an upbeat song, makes it better listening than most boy bands. I would not have thought of buying this album, but I am glad that it was given to me. I was never a fan of Savage Garden, and am not now if I am honest, so would not have bought this personally. It is worth a go though, despite what you might think and what type of music you are into, we all have a softer side no matter how much we try to hide it. There are some amazing lyrics on a few of the songs, and you’ll find yourself listening not only for the music but for the words, extremely poetic and thought provoking. I would avoid the album if you have recently been dumped, as it is full of all the joys of a relationship and love, but apart from that this will cater for any mood. It is designed for sex (can I say that?!) makes brilliant background music! The CD track by track… Well now I have told you a little about the album I suppose I should mention the songs. Song 1 – Affirmation The title track of this album kicks it off to a flying start, I didn’t think much of the tune and to be honest the singer doesn’t sing as much as talk over the music. However the lyrics are brilliant and it is one of my favourites for words. Very upbeat and full of positive vibes, I would listen to this on a morning, to try and coax me out of bed! Extremely catchy and although some of the words are difficult to pick up I’m sure, like me, you’ll find yourself singing it, as hard as you try to fight it. Song 2 – Hold Me Ah love songs, well more about lost love I think, and the ease at which a relationship can go into dust. With strong vocals and a very upbeat and catchy tune this makes a good song to chill out to. A little sad but will make you think about what you have got, and what yo
u have had, queue all the memories of past relationships. Song 3 – I knew I Loved You A little cheesy for me, but a good ballad nether the less. Makes you want to cuddle up to the one you love and have the night in each others arms! Much for the romantic amongst us, or the plain soppy. Song 4 – The Best Thing Change of beat again, this moves back onto the lively and energetic, it is a pop song, not really a love song so that’s ok! It uses strong electric guitars and has a fantastic introduction, first impressions do count. The rest of the song is a little it of a let down after the intro though, but that’s just my point of view. Song 5 – Crash and Burn One of my favourite songs on the album, a definite 10 out of 10 for this song alone. A slushy and slow love song, you can be excused for thinking its Westlife or some other ‘band’ like that. Again lovely words and great for couples - trust me it does work! Song 6 – Chained to You A song about passion and desire, but like a burning flame this song does become very dull very quickly. Despite the upbeat music I didn’t like this song. Designed for those who are new to love, or can listen to anything! Song 7 – The Animal Song To me the worst song on the album, it tries to be rock/pop but comes across as a load of drums and a wailing singer, maybe a little harsh but I hated this song. It’s about living like animals, well I don’t mind mating but really I am used to using a cooker and toilet, although obviously not at the same time. Song 8 – The Lover After Me I don’t know why but I really did like this song, one of my favourites from the album in fact. A slow and sensuous ballad that is about losing a lover and not being able to let go, I’m sure we’ve all been there and know the pain. A beautiful song that will put you into almost a trance lik
e state. Song 9 – Two Beds and a Coffee Machine Very slow and full of emotion, I still don’t quite know what the theme is but it is beautiful, maybe it’s the piano, or the softness of the voice singing it but a lovely song. Song 10 – You Can Still be Free Relaxing, soothing and slow, I think this is my second favorite on the album. The song could stand as a poem on it’s own, very strong and wonderfully sung, trust me just give it a listen. The song is not totally slow; it does pick up and so is not just catering for one type of person. Song 11 – Gunning Down Romance Another song that I really couldn’t stand, it’s not upbeat, it’s not slow, it’s just there. Not very good music, lyrics or singing to be honest, avoid this one. Look at the title for an indication, I don’t think there is a worse song title in existence! Song 12 – Don’t Know You Anymore They saved the best for last here, my personal favorite this is a beautiful love song that I found myself singing for days. Very relaxing and full of lovely lyrics. Don’t miss this song, it gets a well-deserved 10 out of 10 and the singing is amazing. The singer has an amazing voice and it shines through on this song. The album cover is plain and uninspiring, they could have put a little more effort into it if you ask me. But I suppose two good-looking guys would get more sales with their piccies on the front rather than something nice and artistic. Quite dull and boring, but simple and uncluttered, depends what you like really. A nice shade of dark blue! Don’t be put off by the fact that this album is by Savage Garden, I know I was but it does exceed all expectations and delivers some wonderful songs. If you like a few of their single releases then definitely buy the album, you will not be disappointed. There is a song for every mood and occasion,
with some of the best lyrics I have ever heard and good backing music. Sorry guys the music did leave a little to be desired. Still very enjoyable and good background for seduction, well a few of the longs will have to be skipped but overall it will work! Just add the oils and seductive lighting then enjoy.

- 28/06/01 I'm not a Savage Garden fan, never heard any of their songs apart from that 'I'd fly to the moon and back, if you'd be, be my baby yeah' , which I never really liked anyway. Good, well-written op nonetheless. Colin. |

- 25/06/01 I confess.. I like Savage Garden. I too though found that their best songs are not the ones released as singles. Two Beds and a Coffee Machine has lyrics to die for, incidentally - so do some others.
Well reviewed!
