Lonely as the Moon - Jon Harvison
by Bryn Pearson - written on 31/01/02 (Very useful, 28 readings)
Rating:
to the high standards Jon is now capable of. On the whole, it is a good piece of work, but not as sophisticated as more recent recordings. Jon Harvison is a songer songwriter with a strong folk influence on his work. The album features work from several folk notables - the depressingly multi-talented Steafan Hannigan, (who seems to play every instrument under the sun) and fiddler Tom McConville. The tracks: Mask: Not a good start because it does give the wrong impression of the album - it sounds like a 1950s recording, and has a touch of rock and roll influence. Bit of navel gazing in the lyrics. (behind this mask is a man of many faces" well enough ...

Knight's Gambit - Jon Harvison
by FolkFan - written on 31/03/06 (Somewhat useful, 62 readings)
Rating:
a like but Jon has put a fresh arrangement which makes me want to proform this song his way. When you listen to His melodious voice you will gain real pleasure from tradisional songs. At times the ends of verses seem to echo the geordy pipes Jon is a fine guitarist who has been joined by other tallented musicans to produce ...

Knight's Gambit - Jon Harvison
by Bryn Pearson - written on 29/01/02 (Very useful, 79 readings)
Rating:
his previous albums, is entirely traditional. It's a very fine piece of work, featuring performances from some notable folk persons. One of the problems with recordings of Jon Harvison is that they never really do him justice - he's a very energetic, charismatic performer, with an unusually powerful voice. Recordings often seem to lose the subtlety he is capable of, and lack the sparkle of a live performance..... or so I thought - "Knight's Gambit" comes close to giving you some idea of just how good he is live. Other musicians - Jon has been touring about with Saskia Tomkins of late - she's a superb fiddle player, viola player and cellist ...

Past Times With Good Company - Blackmore's Night
More diverse than the studio albums, with less filler.
Songs extended for far too long, and Deep Purple fans perhaps leave even more annoyed than before.
Opel - Syd Barrett
Probably the most comprehensive collection of rare material.
Still a lot of overlap in the form of alternate takes, which tend to be inferior.
The Physics Of Fire - Becoming the Archetype
Doesn't descend into screaming metalcore.
Progressive elements are now pretty dull, and most songs sound exactly the same.
Jeff - Jeff Beck
Techno rhythms have been toned down.
Hip hop and electronic elements still lead the way, and are rubbish.
Hip Hop Is Dead - 50 Cent
Hip-Hop & Rap - East Coast - 2007
Hats Off To The Buskers - The View
SAME JEANS
STREET LIGHTS
Darwin - Banco del Mutuo Soccorso
Perfects the chamber prog style, and calms down some of the structural insanity.
Still only for hardcore prog fans.
Barrett - Syd Barrett
More stereotypical Barrett, stabilised by other musicians.
Less individual as a result.
Il Vuoto - Franco Battiao
Classical elements incorporated nicely.
Contrasting pop and electro elements in certain songs.
