Advantages: Some catchy tunes

Disadvantages: Not enough here

I must admit that I do hold a bit of prejudice against a lot of Punk bands because I just usually dismiss them as brainless music that's churned out without much feeling and is just silly. Sum 41 don't exactly dispell me from that fact, but for its own intents and purposes, it is tailor-made for a young audience and in that regard was quite well recieved as a knowingly juvenile slice of music. They're not great musicians, but they're a fun group and this is a decent enough album with some catchy songs, I must admit.

Their first big hit, Fat Lip, is what propelled them to fame, and it's a really strange mix because it initially sounds like a Punk song, but the lyrics are delivered at such a quick-fire pace that you could easily mistake it for some sort of Rapcore combination. I won't even try and discern the lyrics or the meaning, but it's catchy enough and quite good

What I like more, though, is the 90-second addendum to the song, called Pain For Pleasure, a rather clever mockery of the overly bombastic and self-serious rock of the 1980s. The music video also makes this a lot funnier, as the group are all dressed up in stereotypical 80s garb.

This is a breezy album and not a challenging listen, and to be honest I think that's all its target audience want - something that's easy to listen to, a bit fun, and loud enough to headbang to. It's trying to be as daft and quirky as it can be, and with tracks like Motivation and In Too Deep, it succeeds grandly (particularly if you watch the music videos too!). Still, if you're after value for money, this is the length of maybe only half a normal album, so it's not so great in that regard.

Summary: Just not substantial enough
