Advantages: Rush's first live album [another 4.5 out of 5]
Disadvantages: none that I can see
This was the band's fifth album, preceeded by Rush, Fly By Night, Caress of Steel And 2112.
The songs include live versions of:
Bastille Day, Anthem, Fly by Night/In the Mood [the first song seguaying into the second], Something for Nothing, Lakeside Park, 2112 [I. Overture, II. The Temples of Syrinx, III. Presentation, IV. Soliloquy and V. Grand Finale], By-tor and the Snow Dog, In the End, Working Man/Finding My Way, and What You're Doing.
This wasn't the first "live" album I'd ever purchased, but it has always been my favorite. Some bands release live albums that are great dissappointments, with poor accoustics, mixing, editing and the such, though I won't go into any of them here. This is not one of those albums!
I first learned about Rush shortly after their release of 2112. I was in high school and the two main musical followings at the time were Rush and Kiss. I followed the Rush bandwagon.
After you buy the studio albums and listen time and time again you know the words and the breaks and the songs stay with you. Then you see them in concert and you realize just how talented they really are! This is one of the best live bands to come down the road yet, and this album is a great representation of their early work.
Again, this is one of my top ten have-to-have albums. My favorites from this offering are In the End, Lakeside Park, Something for Nothing and By-tor and the Snow Dog, though their live version of 2112 blew me away too...
Alex Lifeson is an excellent guitarist with his own sound. Geddy Lee is one of the best bass players - period! Neil Peart again is one of, if not the best drummer i have ever had the pleasure to see live. He also writes the majority of the lyrics.
I have been fortunate enough to have seen them at least eight times from Wheeling, WV to Pittsburgh, PA to DC, though alas the last time has been way too many years ago. I have never been dissappointed, and if you grab a copy of All the World's a Stage, you won't be either!
If you're have even passing interest in the 70's progressive rock, Rush or just great rock music, get a copy of this album!
Summary: One of the best "live" albums of all time! You will not be dissappointed!
