Advantages: hip pop music
Disadvantages: quirky in places
Lily's second album has just been released, so I thought a reflective look back at her first offering was in order. The album contains some pop gems and a few tracks with attitude and swagger.
Who is she:
Bigmouthed daughter of comedian Keith Allen and sister of actor Alfie.
On this album:
The number one hit 'Smile' arrived from nowhere and notched up so much airplay it surged to number one effortlessly. Lily's vocals are playful and despite the lovely melody, the lyrics have a lot more bite than you might expect. If you listen carefully, it is rather evil little pop song and so much the better for it.
'LDN' was the followup, with a rich meldoy which intrigues, while Lily pays homage to her hometown.
Highlights:
I loved 'Littlest Things' which curiously samples music from the erotic films 'Emmanuelle'. It is an odd choice yet it works really well giving the track a haunting and unhinged feel, yet in the same breath it works with an understated magic. Lily's vocals are delicate here and have a sense of fragility about them. I rather liked 'Alfie' which pays tribute to her brother with some amusing lyrics and a nursery rhyme sort of tune.
Verdict:
Lily has her own style, she seems to drift in and out of genres and can't be pinned down. Yet the tracks are stylish and smart and sound very now.
Summary: super
