... Night' is better known as the old music from 'The Clothes Show.' 'We All Feel Better In The Dark' is an absolute masterpiece, and, along with I want a dog, is one of a very small number (about 2 or 3) of Pet Shop Boys' songs to feature keyboardist Chris Lowe on vocals. As most of these songs are about 15 years old there is a strongly eighties feel to this album, though not to the ridiculous length of artists like 'Les Rhythmes Digitales.' The simple eighties is, of course, genuine, as that is when most of the songs we...more

Premium Review Alternative - Pet Shop Boys: Flipside (368 words)

Rating:

This album is very much 'one for the fans,' not something I would recommend as the best introduction to the Pet Shop Boys. That said, there are some gems on here that everyone can enjoy. 'Alternative' is a collection of B-Sides from Pet Shop Boys' singles from the first release of 'Opportunities,' up to the 1993/4 singles from the album 'Very.' Across these 2CDs (30 tracks) are a couple of songs of particular interest. 'Paninaro,' which was released as an A-side single in Italy (and eventually remixed and released over here in 1995), is a brilliant mid-eighties dance song. 'In The Night' is better known as the old music from 'The Clothes Show.' 'We All Feel Better ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review There is no Alternative (365 words)

Rating:

Alternative is a collection of B sides and other tracks that were not included in the Boys main albums. For a normal band this would be the sound of brains snoring and half hearted efforts. But, this in fact reminds us that the Boys are, of course, one of the best things British pop has ever given us. Many of the tracks here are worthy of A side status for the Boys themselves and other artists will sit back in sheer envy for the quality and inventiveness shown. At well over two hours, Alternative is getting on for the length of an Oliver Stone movie and is much more entertainingly informative about the beast that is pop culture. Great tunes, good mixing, nice sequencing. Shame the "Clubber's Guide"s have gone down in quality.

The Sky's Gone Out - Bauhaus
Builds on the style of the debut, and indulges in successful experiments. Some songs are a little weak, or rely too much on volume gimmicks, and lack structure.

Press The Eject And Give Me The Tape - Bauhaus
A slightly different take on some songs. A bit cheeky to sell it as an independent album, considering it was originally a bonus LP.

Mask - Bauhaus
Kick-started the gothic rock movement (if you consider that a good thing). Repetitive and less original than the previous album.

Into The Woods - Malcolm Middleton
Folk - 2005

In The Flat Field - Bauhaus
Strong, inventive and original debut, with innovative guitars and passionate vocals. Songs tend to follow the same build-up/pay-off structure and are often repetitive.

Go Away White - Bauhaus
New Wave & Post-punk - 2008

Frank: Expanded Reissue - Squeeze
A musical lesson in the history of british guitar pop.Musically&lyrically cool&catchy.Retro appeal. Not their best album, but definitely doesnt deserve to have flopped as much as it did.

Crackle - The Best Of Bauhaus - Bauhaus

Some more material that may never have happened. A disappointing swan song.
