Advantages: original, catchy, melodic, many classics
Disadvantages: some typical Green Day stuff
This has to be the most surprising album yet from Green Day after the studio demo recording for their latest release was stolen from their recording studio. The band seemed to have moved away from their typical new wave punk style and focused on a more commercial and mainstream type of rock music. In terms of popularity I think that this album has 'made' Green Day.
They kickstart the album with the classic song 'American Idiot' which was released as the first single from the album. Heavy melodic guitar riffs and catchy vocals are a great start whilst Billie Joe Armstrong retains his typical un-mistakable vocal sound and focuses on the american government.
Jesus Of Suburbia then takes you on a long journey through five sub-sections, all of which would make great songs if they had been developed on their own. By the time this track ended Green Day had made a superb impression on me (I had never liked them before!).
Two more singles follow the track, Holiday and Boulevard Of Broken Dreams. Not particularly original titles but superbly original songs that ooze plenty of melodic structure and get you singing along to them without effort.
Are We The Waiting tones things down for a more ballad-esque style song before kicking in to one of my favourites, Give Me Novocaine - an excellently titled rock song with a classic edge.
What follows these tracks I would call typical Green Day tracks which take you back to the bands previous typical style, apart from When September Ends which again, is a superbly melodic but toned down track.
This band have managed to quickly build up a professional profile and have a good history behind them to back it up. American Idiot is by far, in my opinion, the best of their releases yet and hopefully there's more to come.
Summary: Green Day's best release to date!
