Advantages: Another great Crowes album
Disadvantages: There are no disadvantages
Sorry dooyoo but this was released in 1994. Anyway, it's the third album from Atlanta southern-fried rockers The Black Crowes and whilst not quite as good as their previous release The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion (the greatest album ever made in my opinion) it's still very very good indeed.
Whilst that earlier album was all Allman Brothers style boogie and blues here the Crowes, with the magnificent white blues singer Chris Robinson and guitarist bro Rich, lay down a vary of styles from funk (P25 London), down-home acoustic strumming (Downtown Money Waster), flower power hippy stuff (She Gave Good Sunflower) and also more straightforward heavy rock (the outstanding Cursed Diamond and Tied Up And Swallowed). With the great guitarist Marc Ford on the payroll how could they fail and they don't as he delivers killer slide guitar on the epics Wiser Time and gorgeous ballad Descending, backed up with Eddie Harsch on grand piano.
After this it was downhill all the way, bassist Jonny Colt walked out and Marc Ford was fired halfway through a tour, the follow up Five Snakes And One Charm is not a patch on this or the earlier two. Now the band are currently in the deep freeze.
This is a really good example of 1990's American rock music before Nirvana and their ilk came along and strangled the life out of many a creative band. Oh and the cover - it's from a 1976 Hustler girlie mag front cover. Annoyed a lot of people. but not me baby.
Summary: Great rock from one of America's finest bands

- 06/02/06 Yeah I kinda agree with you about where rock was focussed prior to the Grunge explosion. |
