I dont normally like new metal but... This is an extremely good debut from a band that sound a lot different to other nu-metal offerings, such as the highly overrated 'Linkin Park' and 'Limp Bizkit'. The reason why this is such a satisfying listen is because it is one of those albums that you have to listen to a couple of times before it all makes sense. There are a lot of musical styles intermingled throughout the album proper, from ska (Flesh & Bone) to pop (Smooth Criminal) through to downright metal (Whisper). The singles 'Movies' and 'Smooth Criminal' are perfect mass-market efforts that hit all the right notes (they couldn't go wrong with 'Smooth Criminal'), 'Movies' in particular being an outstanding song that is fresh and pop-sounding but is a definite grower. There are many other highs on the album. 'Attitude' and 'Death Day' are, again, songs that creep up on you and get you singing along when you least expect it. 'Universe' is epic in it's deliverance and ends a fine collection of tracks. My only gripe is that 'Calico' and 'Wish' are redundant. They sound like songs that are just tacked on. Without them the album would be 11 tracks without a thing wrong with them. Brilliant record filled with songs that will stand the test of time, that is they will require future listening and you wont get bored of them. A nu-metal album I actually like. A miracle.

- 25/09/01 Good op... I don't think they had to do much to MJ's smooth criminal, it already had Slash doing a riff on it, getting rid of Micheal ooohing and ahhhing made it different *s* ~~K~~ |
