This is Volume 2 of what became a very popular short run of albums. Unlike the usual Beatles compilations -the Anthology ones go little more left field - being full to the brim with early and rare recordings. As a glimpse into the recording process, this works more successfully than Anthology 1. To many this was the Beatles best era, & takes us from 'Help!' through to 'Magical Mystery Tour' in early 1968. Again, this set is started off by another 'new' Beatles track, in the form of 'Real Love' - another Lennon outtake. Working less well & coming on the back of 'Free as a Bird' this track has been pretty much forgotten since it's release. While the first disc features some live tracks from the band's final days as a touring live act, the emphasis is soon on alternate takes from what is without doubt their most productive time in the studio. ... This album is the second installment in the anthology series. It kicks off with the excellent Real Love - another song that was written by Lennon in the seventies and then finished by the other three in the mid nineties. As a Beatles song, this shows the band back on top form and shows that they can still produce high class songs together even though they spent a great time apart. The album includes variations of a large number of their songs that were produced whilst in the recording studios.
