This is the third and final Mercury Records album from Brian McKnight, It was released in 1997 and it further confirmed his status as one of the R&B genres premier solo artists. This album features a collaboration from Mase on the single You should be mine (Don't waste my time) which became McKnight's biggest hit in four years.
The title track opens with a funky guitar lick and then the distinctive keyboard comes in. His voice sounds as good as ever and this is one of the best songs of the album. This song is asking an ex girlfriend if I ever cross your mind. A very emotive subject which everyone can relate to.
This is one of the best sounding musically on the album, A lovely ballad with some beautiful strings and smooth backing vocals. His voice sounds really really good with this ballad about wondering whether someone could be "the one". This song is done superbly well.
3. You should be mine (Don't waste my time)
This is the single which Mase appears on and is a catchy track which is talking to a girl to make their mind up whether they will be with you or are they just wasting your time. I'm sure many of you have felt this way about a particular relationship you have been in which doesnt seem to be going anywhere.
4. Show me the way back to your heart
This is a lovely ballad which opens with a guitar piece that sounds like the one on Toni Braxton's classic Unbreak my heart. This is a touching ballad that shows off the emotion in his voice. A gentle feel throught that you should just lie back and relax to.
5. Everytime we say goodbye
This isnt a bad track but doesnt have quite enough about it to reach the quality of the best tracks on Anytime. Not bad though. I still like to listen to it now and again.
6. You Got the bomb
This is the weakest song on the album, Although it has some nice backing music it doesnt have the same spark as the other ballads do which is a shame as the majority of the rest of the album is up to such a great standard.
7. Hold Me
This is a catchy track with a light hip hop beat and some nice female backing vocals. A nice contrast to the ballads on the album as it is always good to mix it up a bit in terms of the spread of ballads and uptempo tracks.
8.The Only One For Me
I just love the feel of this track, his voice opens the track and then he is joined by the melody of the keyboards, A very nice ballad indeed which brings the quality back up to where it should be after a couple of drops in standard.
9. Til I Get Over You
This starts very well and carries on, It is Another lovely ballad, This has a feel of some of his best songs from his Back at One album which I reviewed the other day. A very nice laid back track indeed.
10.I Belong To You
This has a very acoustic feel as if it would be a great track to perform acoustically live. One of his best lesser known tracks for sure. It has a great smooth feel and should attract a lot of Brian McKnight fans.
11. Jam Knock
This is a midtempo track with an old school hip hop beat. It is probably the weakest uptempo track on the album but is still fine to listen to as it isnt a bad track just not up there with his best.
12.When The Chariot Comes
This is one of his most different songs, A kind of monk chant is in the background and then the vocals come in," As I lay me down to sleep I pray my soul you keep If I die before I wake
I pray my soul you take Cause I gotta be ready, when Jesus comes When the chariot comes
Gonna be, got to be ready when the chariot comes
Said I'm gonna be, got to be ready when the chariot comes"
This is a very good album indeed and it shows what a great artist he was set to be, Anytime is a great album and is still great to listen to today Eleven years on. Not his best but a very good album nonetheless.
