Brilliant! (Appetite For Destruction - Guns n' Roses)

Advantages: The whole album from start to finish Disadvantages: There are none This is STILL the best rock album of my lifetime, and I doubt whether there has ever been a better one! From the opening chords of 'Welcome to the Jungle' you get everything you could ever want, with soaring vocals, crunching riffs and epic guitar solos. You get an insight in Axl's mindset long before anyone realised he was a bit mad, with the paranoia of 'Out ta Get Me', and a glimpse of what eventually caused the band to self-destruct, with the story of a heroin addict in 'Mr Brownstone' (Axl's beef with Slash about his habit, on one occasion aired on stage before performing this song was the beginning of the end for the original line-up) You also get the two most instantly recognisable rock tracks for an entire generation, the hard-nosed raw energy of 'Paradise City' and the contrasting appeal of 'Sweet Child Of Mine', a beautifully constructed ballad which could just as easily apply to a partner as to a daughter. But for an album to be deemed a classic, you need it to offer more than just a few brilliant singles, and perhaps the most underrated element of this one is the likes of 'Rocket Queen', 'Think about You' and 'It's so Easy', often forgotten but great tracks in their own right rather than the kind of filler which is so often prevalent. In short, an absolute classic Summary: A must have album |
