When I first heard this album, I will admit to being rendered wordless for several hours. It is, in my opinion, simply the greatest hard rock album ever made. Forget nu-metal, grunge, and all that rubbish, if you want to know what hard rock really is, listen to this album. In my opinion there is only one weak song on the whole record, Anything Goes, but this minor point is overshadowed by the sheer greatness of such songs as Nightrain, Welcome to the Jungle, Mr Brownstone, and Paradise City. The Guns N' Roses song most people know is Sweet Child O' Mine, with it's incredible guitar intro from Slash, but that is in no way the best song on the album. The rhythm guitar work from Izzy Stradlin is superb throughout the album, and his interplay with the stunning lead work by Slash will never be bettered. For those that believe that Guns were merely the Axl and Slash show, I can only say that in my opinion this album proves that the best work from this band was written by the band as a whole, Slash, Izzy, Duff McKagan, Axl Rose and Steven Adler. Appetite for Destruction is the best work of one of the greatest rock n' roll bands of all time, and a must-own for any hard rock fan, even if Axl's voice is most definitely an acquired taste. It's just a shame that a few years later, bands like Nirvana came along, causing people who've never heard this band on full rocking form to deride them as 'hair metal'. It's also a shame that such an excellent band were led by Axl's ambition into the excessive balladry of the 'Use your Illusion' albums. But whatever else, buy this album, cause it's absolutely brilliant. Summary: |
