Aquarium - Aqua
Advantages: A variety of excellent up tempo numbers and moving ballads
Disadvantages: They split after 2 albums
When Aqua released their first single 'Barbie Girl' in 1997, I think most people assumed that they would be a one-hit-wonder with just a single novelty track. However, Aqua proved everyone wrong, with many more hits, most of which feature on this fab album. 'Barbie Girl' went to number one in the UK and their two subsequent hits 'Doctor Jones' and 'Turn Back Time' did the same. This is actually a hugely successful beginning that not many other bands have rivalled.
Aqua are a Danish-Norwegian group who produce happy, poppy, danceable songs which are admittedly very cheesy, but are also a lot of fun.
Personally I love Aqua's music. It's not going to win any awards for deep and meaningful lyrics or beautiful arrangements, but it is great fun and always cheers me up after a depressing day.
I also think that 'Aquarium' would be a great album to buy for kids who are too old for 'children's songs' or nursery rhymes, but not old enough for mainstream chart music. It would go down really well at a children's party.
The track list is as follows:
1. Happy Boys & Girls
2. My Oh My
3. Barbie Girl
4. Good Morning Sunshine
5. Doctor Jones
6. Heat Of The Night
7. Be A Man
8. Lollipop (Candyman)
9. Roses Are Red
10. Turn Back Time
11. Calling You
Although most of these follow a very upbeat, poppy formula, there are a few slower songs, most notably the lovely ballad 'Turn Back Time' which is on the Sliding Doors soundtrack, and also my favourite track on the album, 'Be A Man', which is a gorgeous emotional song that really shows off the smooth, full tones of the lead singer's voice.
Aqua followed up 'Aquarium' with a second album, 'Aquarius', in 2000. This was not quite as successful and in 2002 the band split, though they are rumoured to be reuniting for a tour in 2009, and hopefully releasing some new material!
You can buy 'Aquarium' for £6.97 at Amazon.co.uk though I imagine you could find it for a couple of quid on Ebay.
Summary: An excellent selection of pop-dance music for kids and adults to jump around to!
