30 Greatest Hits - Aretha Franklin

Premium Review Queen of soul (396 words)
by cswann - written on 28/09/00 (Very useful, 59 readings)
Rating:

the best female singer there has ever been. No one in pop / soul comes close, and even compared to Maria Callas, or Billie Holliday - I still think that Aretha at her best is unbeatable. And this is a selection from her golden years, 1967 - 74. There are so many soul classics on here - satisfaction is surely guaranteed for anyone. It starts with "I never loved a man the way I loved you", which is perfect R&B. She's singing the traditional black woman's tale about being a victim, but in such a powerful way that you know it can't go on much longer. Sure enough, next up is "RESPECT" - it was already a great song by Otis Redding, but ...

Young, Gifted And Black - Aretha Franklin

Premium Review 70s Classic (1101 words)

Rating:

still think it s as great as the first time I heard it. It is a perfect introduction to the music of Aretha Franklin for the uninitiated, more so I would say than a greatest hits which usually just collects together all the Atlantic singles, which are wonderful, but there s more to the picture than that. This album gives the breadth of Aretha s talent as a Composer/Interpreter/Singer/Pianist and all round soul diva. The great news is it can be picked up for under £5 on Amazon and really is essential listening. The liner notes by David Nathan are superb and very informative with track information/recording dates ...

Rating:

in my collection. Aretha shows all her vocal talent throughout the album and every single song is great and its not very often someone says that. As there is usually at least one weak track. The very best songs though are Rock Steady and Didn t I blow your mind this time If your like me and your too young to remember her in ...

Not An Angel - City Sleeps
The sound is quite bouncy and fun, the vocal lines are very well sung out. The music is really quite generic and contrived; it's all been done before and better.

Nothing To Prove - H2O
Uplifting, full of fun, vocally excellent, instrumentally striking. The 5 minute spoken outro is incredibly unnecessary.

Light From Above - Black Tide
The guitar work is quite strong, instrumentally impressive. The sound has been done better before, the vocal performance lacks passion.

Love Always - K-Ci & Jojo
Lots of big tunes One trakcs doesn't fit in

Sundowning - This Is Hell
Hard and heavy hardcore punk, brutally hard hitting and very well put across. The album brings nothing new to the genre of hardcore punk

Surrender All But Our Skin - Deserves To Die

We Are The Problem - US Bombs
A couple of half decent tracks. Most of the album is really quite dull and uninspiring.
