When the Deftones first came onto the scene, it was with more of a whimper than a bang. This was no fault of theirs, however, as their debut album 'Adrenaline' was a fine collection of tortured vocalising and blunt-edged riffing. 'Around The Fur' is even less commercial than 'Adrenaline' but pushes the intensity and melody levels up one notch higher. Their ever-cool frontman Chino Moreno manages to wring out every different noise from his throat on this album, and most of the time, on one song. For example, 'Lotion' is completely crushing; staccato riffs over a whitewash of vocal screams, that is, until the gorgeously melodic chorus occurs which changes the ... Read the complete review

The Deftones are personally one of my favorite bands, I have been a fan since "adrenaline" slowly made its way to my house from a U.S import months before it was released in the U.K. This is the Deftones second outing into the dark forest they call "nu-metal" where your release is either hit-or-miss, you either become unbearably unpopular to your fans (take limp bizkit for instance) or you create a solid base for your next album and a few fans who will spread your album through friends and you will not have to resort to advertisment adn threats of being dubbed "sell outs". The album is a mix of heavy guitar ... Read the complete review

After Deftones' debut 'Adrenaline' slowly blistered through Europe and America, the band knew it was going to be difficult to top that initial success, so you can forgive them for failing, just. 'Around The Fur' is an almost conformist 'neo-metal' album, it dwindles into the background and camouflages behind better releases by the likes of Korn and so forth. Though there are a handful of radio friendly slabs of rock on this album, such as: 'My Own Summer (Shove It)', 'Around The Fur' and 'Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)', the whole record isn't cohesive enough as a complete work. You almost yawn when you hear it ... Read the complete review

After the breakthrough first album these boys had a lot to do to please the critics and once again they blew everyone away with an album which pushes the boundries of modern music even further. This progresion from the first album saw the band evolving to suit and produced two succesful singles 'my own summer' ( off The Matrix) and 'Be quite and drive'. The sheer energy and power makes this album a classic and probably the most definative deftones album. It avoids comparisons once again and fails to conform to any style, the songs on this are overall much more complete and have more depth, but for some reason buying this album make you apreciate the ... This is one album that you should own. Why? Because it's fucking great, that's why. The Deftones burst onto the scene with 'Adrenaline' which showed the bands raw, unfocused talent. I like that one better because it's more aggressive but this one's better musically. 'Around the Fur' shows the band's ability to write beautiful melodies, intricately structured songs which convey emotion perfectly while still having the ability to tear shit up (in my opinion THE most important thing a band - particularly a metal band - can have, bands without balls are the scum of the earth). The album kicks off with 'My Own ... Read the complete review
