Advantages: Powerful, Great riffs, Chino's da man!

Disadvantages: I've heard it too much now!

This is one album that you should own. Why? Because it's fucking great, that's why.
The Deftones burst onto the scene with 'Adrenaline' which showed the bands raw, unfocused talent. I like that one better because it's more aggressive but this one's better musically. 'Around the Fur' shows the band's ability to write beautiful melodies, intricately structured songs which convey emotion perfectly while still having the ability to tear shit up (in my opinion THE most important thing a band - particularly a metal band - can have, bands without balls are the scum of the earth).

The album kicks off with 'My Own Summer', a veritable masterpiece of a song with more kick than a mule and catchier than smallpox. That riff is just bloody amazing. How did they come up with that? The amount of groove and energy in this song (1 part melody and 2 parts aggression) make it one of the best songs of all time (in my humble opinion), definitely the best song on the album.

Other highlight's include 'Lotion' (you have to hear it!) and 'Headup' which features the ex-Sepultura vocalist Max Cavalera (who went on to form Soulfly) on vocals, helping Chino to tear up even more shit than usual as nobody can scream quite like Max. Fock sheet op! The album is very well structured with the tracks following a natural progression making this one album that is easily listened to in it's entirity even though the emotions conveyed on some songs are in stark contrast to the emotions conveyed on others.

Most Nu metal bands either can't write vocal melodys without resembling the pop fodder they so closely resemble or can't write fresh sounding riffs (ham-fisted, unimaginative riffing goes down well with the 'kids' who would'nt know a decent riff if it tore thier fucking heads off). The Deftones have no such problems, mixing crushing riffs with melodic vocals without losing any
momentum or power. This album is a perfect example of this. The only 'Nu' metal (or 'emo' if you like) band that are worth a shit.
