      Good fun!

Specimen never released an album the first time they were together, only being able to muster up a few singles and an EP, in 1997 a compilation album called Azoic was released though and this features all of the band's 80s music.

Specimen have a raw early goth sound to them and are generally labeled in the so-called death rock category but unlike their dramatic contemporaries Sex Gang Children, they have a more darker moody sound to them which is chirped up by the camp sounds of the vocalist Olli Wisdom.

The band have some very catchy songs like "Returning from a Journey" which sounds like a new wave version of The Human League at their best and I'm surprised the song never broke into the mainstream. The simplicity of the electronic music added is a fresh of breath air in an era where it was common to fiddle with keyboards far too much as if it was a new toy. A lot of praise must go to outlandish keyboard player Johnny Slut for his superbly well-timed work. I think the band were a bit ahead of their time..the track Sharp teeth pretty teeth is unbelievably twee and sounds very Bowie influenced -

      "Sitting on your high horse.
When the cowboys come for me,
Its sucha a crude form of transport,
      A means to an end,
And an end and an end and an end."

The live tracks do sound a bit worse for wear though.

I enjoyed this album a lot, it's something which is ideal for playing in the background when you are doing things in the house, the album recently got back together and released their first full album "Electric Ballroom", an album I hope to review in the near future.
