Full of promise - but little delivery (Baby One More Time - Britney Spears)

When ‘Baby One More Time’ came out, I thought perhaps we had seen the beginning of a new megastar. And to some extent I was right – Britney Spears is now a huge success. However, I was hoping for something more, ‘the new Madonna’ or something like that and to these ends I was to be disappointed.

While the title track is of course excellent, most of the rest of the album sounds the same, and it seems too formulaic and generic. I can’t stand ‘Sometimes’ but ‘Born To Make You Happy’ and ‘(You Drive Me) Crazy are not bad. ‘Email My Heart’ is tolerable as well, but the rest is bland mush – which is still better than what she has since come out with.

Still, as a debut album, it’s not a bad start and Britney shows she has a sense of humour by tackling ‘The Beat Goes On’. The question is: will the beat go on for her? To do so, she needs to ditch the formula songwriters and maybe do some more songs herself or at least get someone quirky and different.
