Advantages: pleasing covers, safe
Disadvantages: three of them do NOTHING
I was moderately thrilled when I found Boyzone were releasing a Greatest Hits in 2008. Their absence from the charts had been a pleasant one, but when they resurfaced I was reminded that they had released a few fine songs in their career.
Who are they:
Irish group, comprising Ronan, Steven, Shane, Mikey and Keith. Lead vocals are done mainly by Ronan and Steven.
On this album:
They start with their biggest hit 'No Matter What' which is a strong moving ballad with good vocals from Ronan, but a whiney turn from Gately. The chorus is uplifting though and the lyrics are inspiring. They do rather well with the ballads, 'Baby Can I Hold You' might be a cover, but it is done with integrity and conviction and one of the highlights.
Album Highlights:
'Words' is another cover yet is done rather well. Ronan pulls off a mature performance and his delivery is assured and smooth here. I also rate 'A Different Beat' which has a tribal African feel about it and gives the lads a different sound which is refreshing. I hate to say it, but their version of 'When The Going Gets Tough' is a good old romp too and always puts a smile on the face.
Poor Moments:
'I Love The Way You Love Me' is a dreary and downbeat affair best skipped over. Only play this if you have hit an all time low!
Overall:
There are many hits here and one or two standout songs, they excel at covers but at the end of the day they just aren't as good as Take That are they!
Summary: safe and dreary
