Advantages: Great singer.

Disadvantages: Not that good of a rep.

My rates for other people are coming up slowly but surely.

In the past couple of months, everyone who owns a TV or Radio or even anyone that reads the newspaper knows who Amy Winehouse is, and not for any good reasons. Despite all of her drug/achahol problems, she's an amazing singer who has written one of the best albums in the past decade and I think it will go to be one of the best albums ever. However, Amy is not known for that.

About Amy Winehouse

-----------------------

Born Amy Jade Winehouse in Southgate, London in 1983, Amy is well known for her voice being able to cope with a great range of musical genres from soul, jazz and even R'n'B.
Despite the amazing singing voice, Amy is probably most famous for her 'beehive' hairstyle and of course her struggle with drug and achahol. She has become pretty self-destructive, turning up to her own gigs and even award ceremonies 'of-her-head'. It has caused some cancellation of tour dates and her reputation in the world of music, has gone down dramatically, however it can not be said that, this girl does have talent.

Back To Black

----------------
The first song I ever heard from this album was of course 'Rehab', I think after it's release 'they tried to make me go to rehab, but I said no, no, no.' was said by every person in my school. However it wasn't until one of her other singles that she released 'Tears Dry On There Own' that I begun to notice that this girl did have talent. She had this soulful sound with a bit of raw grit placed in there and with all her songs that combination of amazing voice and amazing lyrics worked wonderfully.

I then began to look into buying her cd, however all of the controversy surrounded her stopped me. So in the end I was very naughty and borrowed it off a mate.
The album itself is very enjoyable, boarding across excellent. There are albums that will stay with us forever, and I think Back To Black is one of them. It's a classic.

As a single, I do think every track would be able to be sold separately and do amazingly well in the charts, however I do think the one's she has released are the best... and the others may fail in comparison, however as an album it's a joy to listen to.
Here's what I think, the grading is done in comparison to the other songs on the album not to other albums. It's a fantastic album and could beat most.

What I Think

-------------
1. Rehab
--------------------
Probably the most popular on the album, but not in least the best. It's a good song, but a bit too overplayed. After a while the lyrics do drive you a bit mad, but you can't deny it's a great song.

8/10
------------------------------------
2. You Know I'm No Good- (4:17)
------------------------------------
One of the best on the album; it's got the perfect mix of jazz, her amazing vocal talents with the perfect lyrics. It's a fantastic song, and definitely one that shines on this album.

8/10
-------------------------------
3. Me and Mr Jones- (2:33)
-------------------------------
I have heard people say that this is the best song on the album, but I have to disagree. It's a good song, but I'm not too keen on the music in the background, I think it did nothing for the lyrics. As a big fan of bands like Tenacious D, I am no novice to swear words in the songs, but the swear words used in this song are pointless, at least in Tenacious D, they are there to make a point in the song. However it's an alright song, listening to it again, it's not my usual kind of music but it works with in the album, despite the unnecessary swear words.

6/10
-------------------------
4. Just Friends- (3:13)
-------------------------
Worse song on the album in my opinion, very dry and doesn't go with the originality as the rest of the album does.

3/10
-----------------------------
5. Back To Black- (4:02)
-----------------------------
My favourite song on the album, I've heard it sung in every which way by Amy and just think the lyrics are just perfect. Her style of singing really shines through in this song, it's a very basic song, it's just Amy's voice, another instrument and the drums. I've heard her sing it with just her voice and the drums, it works much better then. More of an acoustic feel to it. If I was going to recommend any song on the album, this would be the one.

10/10.

------------------------------------
6. Love Is a Loosing Game- (2:25)
-------------------------------------
This is a very 60's kind of song, it's amazingly sung, but doesn't work as well as some on the album. It's also one of the slower songs on the album; it's quite pleasant to listen to.

6/10
--------------------------------------
7. Tears Dry on There Own- (3:06)
--------------------------------------
I've already said this is the best song on the album, it's full of amazing lyrics, amazing vocal talents. For a while this was my ring tone on my phone, it's a fantastic song and I would recommend this to anyone.

9/10
----------------------------
8. Wake Up Alone- (3:42)
----------------------------
I am unsure why, but when I first heard this, I thought of Rizzo singing it in Grease (she didn't), It was the face that came to mind and that's what Amy's lyrics and singing style is like, very 60's/70's. This is a good song, but not the best by a long shot. Quite a forgettable song, but not painful, you'll still listen to it.

5/10
-------------------------------
9. Some Unholy War- (2:22)
-------------------------------
Bit of a boring song, compared to the others. I do think if it was sung acoustic, it would be a much better song.

5/10

The songs are growers; you'll find yourself hating one song one day and then next be singing along to it on the radio. In my opinion, every time you listen to a different one of her songs, they all change. I couldn't stand 'You Know I'm No Good' but now I think it's one the best on the album.

-----------------------------------
10. He Can Only Hold Her (2:46)
------------------------------------
I think the instruments in this song wrecked it. It's not the best song in the album by far. I think the instruments made it probably the hardest to listen to on the album.
2/10

-------------------------
11. Addicted- (2:45)
------------------------
Another one of my least favourites, apparently most people like it because of the lyrics. It's Amy trying to explain about her problems. It's not a good song however, but just not good in comparison to the others.
5/10.
--------------------------

Anything Else
=
I came home from college today with a blinding headache, so instead of going on the computer I lay down on the couch and actually watched Paul O'Grady. This does have a point. He was talking to a guest and said he had just come back from Africa and there a young girl preformed for him, she was an orphan whose job was looking after her brother and sister. She believed in her hearts of hearts that she'll make it big, but that girl may never have a chance. However Amy Winehouse has been given chance after chance, and throws them back in the publics face.

What I'm trying to say here is that is it right to buy her album? Is it right to fuel her drug habit? It's why I was so against buying her album, I don't think it's fair that someone turns up to her own gigs that people have spent their own hard money on to see their 'idol' and they turn up, excuse my language, 'shit' faced.
It's not fair and I think people like her, her husband and people like Pete Docherty and that model Kate who does the make-up adverts should all finally realise what prisons are there for, not showing kids that if you want to take drugs, become a singer/model/idiot and you'll then be let free by every judge on this earth.

Hope you enjoyed my review, I think this is probably my first ever CD review actually.
Please r/r/c, it will be greatly appreciated. Tell me what you think about Amy W as well, if you disagree with what I've said especially.

Thanks for reading.
Kirsty.

Summary: Worth listening to, not worth buying as it's money in her pocket.

Great review - agree totally about spending our money though on albums when she isn't willing to make the effort for the fans who have put her in the position she is now of having a lot of money!
