      Disillusion's first album (2004).

I tracked this album down after being blown away by the title song, an epic fourteen-minute death metal composition incorporating progressive structures and violins to great effect, without ever sounding derivative of the higher-profile progressive melodic death metal acts such as Opeth or Arsis. Germany's Disillusion play a unique mix of harsh death metal, bordering on metalcore, with classically-influenced atmospheric passages, and while the two styles mostly play consecutively, the occasional mix of styles together is very successful.

This is largely the solo project of Vurtox, who handles vocals, bass, keyboards and one of the guitars, as well as producing the album himself, but he's supported by Rajk Barthel's guitar and Jens Maluschka's drums, as well as assorted guest musicians who pop up when a more obscure instrument is required. This album boasts songs of varying lengths from four to eighteen minutes, but it's the longer songs that are the most fascinating for their sense of progression and cylical structures. One of the more successful experimental death metal albums I've ever heard, the title song is a classic.
