Advantages: lyric writing
Disadvantages: a couple of throwaway tracks
This album, Syd Barretts second (third if you include his album with Pink Floyd) and final record is the sound of a man on the edge of madness- held together with a controlled production.
Whereas on his first solo record, there was little production to hide the fragile state he was undoubtedly in, on this record, all the rough edges have been hidden, and whether you think this is for better or for worse, it certainly gives the record a unique sound.
One often overlooked element of this album that is a vast improvement on his previous work, is the lyric writing. Where his lyrics had always been witty, and often humourous, here they are much more introverted- and certainly touch on the genius he is often claimed to be.
A word about the structure of the album. On the original vinyl there was a neat symmetry to this record. Each side was started with a relatively 'poppy' song, well played and sung- Baby Lemonade and Gigolo Aunt- then the remainder of each side trailed off into 'sydworld' with varying degrees of success before concluding with a charming song about an elephant.
The cd age has ruined that with a selection of bonus tracks that simply don't need to be there. It is very easy to see why the tracks that ended up on the album were chosen- they were simply the only acceptable takes of those songs that were fit for release.
As big a fan as I am- these extra tracks aren't for the casual listener.
Summary: The oft criticised production sits well with me. It gives it it's own sound!
