Advantages: Not your average "classic", but also not too way-out

Disadvantages: Can be harsh sounding at times.

A lot of people think of Bartok's music as being unlistenable and harsh.

Don't take other people's word for it. Go and listen to Bartok yourself, and take the context of his music into account.

Bartok believed that every progression in music is based on music of the past. It's interesting to note that much of Bartok's music is based on Folk music, the music of his Hungarian culture.

The rhythms are complex, the harmonies challenging, and the overall sound is rough and ready, in the spirit of jolly peasant-like dances.

If you're unsure where to start with Bartok, go for his 5 Rumanian Folk Dances, played on violin or clarinet. They're fairly easy to listen to, and will give you a good idea of where Bartok is coming from.
