Advantages: Wonderful Music.

Disadvantages: None.

At the end of Dooyoo opinions about music albums there is a question ‘Favourite album of all time’. Well, probably like a lot of people my all time favourite changes depending upon what mood I am in, but in the majority of cases it is 'Bat Out Of Hell' that is my choice, as this really is a fantastic album.

When you refer to Meat Loaf it always seems confusing as to whether you mean the man, or the group, but it is a ‘sound’ that is so distinctive. Meat Loaf have been around for over 20 years and are still very popular, which is a fine testament to the music they play.

This album contains a mixture of loud, fast music, combined with slow passionate songs that all together make an album that is always worth listening to. If you ever feel a bit down then this is the album to pick up and play, then just get absorbed into the music. I guarantee that by the end of it your troubles will seem less. So if you have a copy, blow off the dust, turn the volume up loud and listen to some great music.

There are only seven tracks on this album and these are:

Bat Out Of Hell.
This ten minute track is such a great way to start this wonderful album. This really is Meat Loaf at their very best. There is so much happening in this music, with power, passion, but also gentleness and sadness. This is heavy rock music at it’s very best. The song tells the story of lost love and the despair this leads to, with a tragic ending. The electric guitar and keyboard playing really do give a deep and loud sound to this song. This track should never be listened to quietly. If you are going to disturb the neighbours, then just put on some headphones and make your ears ring. It will be worth it. If you have ever listened to the lyrics then you will know that the tragic ending is a motorbike crash, when before he dies he can see his own heart, through his torn and ripped skin – “The last thing I see is my heart &#
8211; still beating – like a bat out of hell”. Some gory lyrics, but a really great song.

You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth. (Hot Summer Night)
This track starts with a repertoire between a man and a woman that sets a passionate, tension for the start of the song, with each question answered with just the one word – yes. I always find that I have to answer each question as if drawn into the words by a hidden power. The track is another powerful song that plays with the lyrics of saying those three magic words – I love you. After hearing this track a couple of times it is almost impossible to not sing along to the repetitive lyrics.

Heaven Can Wait.
This slower track is a good contrast after the first two very powerful tracks and is very pleasant to listen to. It is mostly sung to a piano accompaniment, with an orchestra backing that works really well.

All Revved Up With No Place To Go.
This is a traditional rock sound from the 1970’s which you certainly would expect to have heard played at many clubs during that period. The saxophone playing adds a little extra to this fast, ‘head shaking’ track.

Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad.
This is probably one of Meat Loaf’s best known slow songs. I know I said at the beginning of this opinion that this album could make you forget your troubles, well if you have just split up from a partner then this may not be the best track to listen to. It tells the story of a guy who “Wants her, Needs her, but will never Love her”. Some soppy lyrics, but sung in a really great way and with real feeling.

Paradise By The Dashboard Light.
This track is a mixture of a whole number of different styles. It starts as a rock ‘n roll song, telling the story of two 17 year olds making love for the first time on the front seat of a car. There is then a fast, racy section, with a football style commentary Then, at
a crucial moment the girl asks “Will you love me forever?” The track turns into a typical powerful Meat Loaf sound, where the guy has to say that he needs to sleep on it before giving his answer. I suppose somebody will say it is a typical man!

For Crying Out Loud.
This slow song finishes off the album really well. It starts with just a piano accompaniment and builds with the sound of a full orchestra with volume, power and passion and then a finale of the cry – I Love You.

Most of Meat Loaf’s songs tell a story, (mostly love songs) but often they do need to be listened to for a few times in order to realise what they are all about. But, even if you are not bothered about the stories behind the lyrics, you can just enjoy the sound of Meat Loaf that is timeless and sounds so good.

This is not the sort of music that you can play as background music, but it is music that you can just get absorbed into with a loud, passionate, well played and sung heavy rock sound.

The best track is of course the title track (Bat Out Of Hell), but there are no bad tracks on this album.

If my copy of this album ever got damaged it is one that I definitely would replace immediately.
