After the successful progressive black metal approach of 'Monumension,' Enslaved's seventh album sounds wild and incoherent by comparison, but can be better appreciated when viewed as a deliberate attempt to be a little annoying. While I admired the previous album's dedication to a prog sound without falling into the trap of showing off, this album takes the alternate approach, and experiments with styles to an often irritating extent. 'Queen of Night' features some completely random guitar work that's more distracting than interesting, while 'The Dead Stare' has a structure that jumps all over the place, but is still quite fun, and 'Havenless' even includes a ...
