The band were mere babies when this was originally released in 2001 (originally under the moniker Smackin' Isaiah) and the sound while raw, has a somewhat pathetic naivety to it. They have all the passion, rage and insight that is conveyed in their more recent releases, but time has greatly improved their technique. Vocal duties are shared an awful lot more than on subsequent releases (well, it's not the lead singer's fault that he can shout louder than the rest of them). Some tracks on this ...more

Rating:

It feels like my adventure of reviewing albums from my favourite hardcore punk band has just about come full circle as I get to go right back to their first full length release and look back at what has been, in retrospect, a heck of a ride. Thanks to the dooyoo team for adding my suggestions! The wonderfully titled 'Benefits of Thinking Out Loud' is wholly indicative of A Wilhelm Scream's approach to naming, which manages to be something other than pretentious as it's typically: a) Funny! b) Prone to making statements that point out universals - like the need of some folk to think out loud. Purgatory Afterglow - Edge Of Sanity
Approachable death metal. Too many weak songs and failed attempts to combine genres.

Crimson Ii - Edge Of Sanity
If you liked the first one, you'll probably enjoy this too. Re-treads old ground, and doesn't have its predecessor's charm or talent.

Perfect Sym - Fates Warning
Pioneering progressive metal with a distinctive approach. Too many slow songs try my patience.

Awaken The Guardian (cd+dvd) - Fates Warning
Pioneering progressive metal. Rather samey.

Northwind - Falconer
More songs, nice dual guitars, continues established sound. Pretty much the same thing again and again.

Ruun - Enslaved
Effective incorporation of mellow elements into modern black metal. Songs tend towards similarity.

Where At Night The Wood Grouse Plays - Empyrium
Proves the band's folk talents. No metal here, which may disappoint fans.

Wintersunset - Empyrium
Epic folk metal. Slightly overblown and incoherent.
