Best Gay Pride & CSD Anthems

My best friend is a gay man who would be absolutely delighted to be described as, as camp as Butlins. He takes me to some fantastic gay clubs (all of which are fun, friendly and play a range of fabulously cheesy, happy tunes), some memorable Pride marches and generally embraces all things sparkly, camp and fun.

So, when he had a birthday recently and I was looking for "stocking fillers" (do you still call them stocking fillers when it isn't Christmas? Well you get the idea!) to supplement his main gift, this album caught my eye.

I should have spent more time looking at the track list but was in a hurry and didn't pay as much attention as I should have done. Having said that, it only cost £7 so I suppose that you could argue that you get what you pay for! Out of all the tracks, there are only a few that I would describe as "really good" and it was a bit of a let down. So much so that I apologised when giving it to my friend! He tried to make me feel better of course (because he is lovely like that) but we ended up in agreement - this album isn't the best!

      Track list is as follows;

1 Free, Gay & Happy - The Coming out Crew
2 Strong Enough - Marshall Goodman
3 Oh, What a Life - Gloria Gaynor
      4 Day by Day
      5 Last Dance
6 Life Is So Strong - Sharon Williams
7 Set Me Free - Moon Shine, Nell
8 Let the Night Take the Blame - Lorraine McKane
9 I Will Survive [70's Disco Version] - Sharon Douglas
10 Everybody's Free/Turning Back [Original Radio Cut] - Gitta, Rozalla
11 Don't Leave Me This Way - Thelma Houston, The Soultans
12 It's Raining Men [2005 Live Version] - The Weather Girls
13 Life [Club Mix Edit] - House Divas, Barbara Tucker
14 Never Can Say Goodbye [DJ Chris Mix] - House Divas, Barbara Tucker
15 Save This Night for Love - Gloria Gaynor
16 Young Hearts, Run Free [Almighty 2004 Disco Mix] - Hannah Jones
17 You Never Love the Same Way Twice [2005 Remix] - Rozalla
18 Samba de Janeiro [Gay Pride Tribal Mix] - Carrilio

      Disc #2 Tracklisting
1 I Am What I Am [House Club Remix] - Gloria Gaynor
2 I'm Coming Out [Tribal Club Mix] - The Sweet Inspirations
      3 Don't Give Up - Michelle Weeks
4 Sweet Freedom [Eric Kupper Mix] - Shawn Christopher
      5 High Energy
6 Enough Is Enough - Robbie Rivera, Stonebridge
7 Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Boys Town Gang,
8 Say My Name - Discobrothers, RuPaul
9 Love Revolution - Pat Hodges
10 Winner Takes It All - Laura Branigan
11 Arsch der Welt (Der Geilste) [Dance Mix] - Stephan Runge, Claus Vincon
      12 Ist Gut So
      13 Seid Stolz!
14 Wenn der Morgen Kommt - Marianne Rosenberg
15 Ich Liebe das Leben - Vicky Leandros
16 Lieder an Die Liebe - Bernhard Brink
      17 Adrenalin - Villaine
18 F?r Mich Soll's Rote Rosen Regnen - Extrabreit, Hildegard Knef

Would I recommend this album? I'm afraid not! It sounds like it should be fun but just doesn't live up to that expectation. Next year, I will have to try much harder!

      hmm ok

This is one of those albums that will lift your spirits and have you raising your hands aloft, celebrating all that is good about life. There are 36 tracks in total spread over two discs. The CD claims it is all about Gay Pride, so let's see if it lives up to the title.

The opening song is rather in your face. 'Free, Gay and Happy' is all very positive and vibrant, but the tacky factor is slightly overwhelming and you might not want to play this one more than once, unless you want to start being all preachy about your lifestyle.

Stalwart Gloria Gaynor adds some soul and disco depth with 'Oh What A Life' which offers up some more feel good vibes. Her vocal sounds fresh and the song is another celebratory affair. On the subject of Gaynor, 'I Will Survive' is given a dubious makeover from some woman called Sharon.

A dance classic 'Everybody's Free' is churned out yet again by Rozalla and given a spicey twist by merging it with Gitta, though I prefer the original. On the subject of covers, 'Never Can Say Goodbye' is brought up to date with a keen and powerful vocal from Barbara Tucker. She has a rich voice which lends itself well to the soaring emotional chorus. If you fancy something more carnival be sure to check out 'Samba de Janeiro [Gay Pride Tribal Mix]' by Carrilio which is all drums and exotic rhythms.

My other choice picks would be 'I'm Coming Out [Tribal Club Mix]' by The Sweet Inspirations, which is a song for people who are finding themselves and being proud about who they are. 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' is given a rerub by Boys Town Gang, but lacks the charisma of the original version.

The late Laura Branigan turns in an impressive Abba cover, which is pleasing, before the album hits a tedious run of tracky German tracks, which are best avoided.

A cheap set of artwork, but a handful of acceptable songs make this worth a small peek.
