Advantages: well produced
Disadvantages: bland
It is interesting that Donell Jones even has a best of. In the UK he had, now let me see, was it one hit single? 'U Know What's Up' gave him a top five hit, but then he vanished into the ether. This album is a collection of his best works and comprises thirteen songs.
'U Know What's Up' is the kind of track Mark Morrison should be making now, a smooth a seductive piece of r and with a hook laden chorus and a set of fine slinky vocals. Jones is convincing and realy feels the lyrics as he delivers them. The song works if you play it over and over too, so a good start.
Check out the lovely 'Shorty' which has a nice genuine emotion running through it, the kind of track that would work for Boyz 2 Men. I like his confidence on here. 'Spend The Night' has a groove which you could have a slow dance to, think of Alexander O Neal meeting Another Level. This one is alright, though lacks bite on the verses and the backing vocals seem to overpower it.
'Where I Wanna Be' is very slow and refined with a satisfying amount of sentiment, though it is a little plodding and there is not a clear catchy hook to cement the appeal. Maybe one to play late at night before you go to bed. The album progresses in the same fashion with more slinky beats, we hit 'Cry' and it does feel like this man is a one trick pony. Yes his voice is soulful and he really knows how to seduce you with slow rhythms and sexy vocals, but the songs are not that memorable. 'Cry' is a prime example. Produced well, but lacking anything that makes you sit up and go wow. Might explain why he only had one hit...
